Inspecting your trees during spring, summer and fall can help detect issues that directly affect a tree’s health. Problems caused by insects and disease can be found when trees are active. However, winter is the perfect time to identify issues regarding the structure of a tree because leaves aren’t present during winter. A clearer view is offered to an arborist conducting inspection, which will allow for a thorough evaluation of your tree’s structural status.
Melbourne Tree Removal Guys takes advantage of dormant season tree inspections in order to identify and plan accordingly for the spring season. Our goal with each evaluation is to use methods influenced by science to really diagnose the current or potential problems a tree may be enduring. With the goal to restore health, we’d exhaust all options before considering removal.
What do we look for when we examine trees? Our checklist includes:
Dead, Broken and Hanging Branches: While these are unfortunately common, removing weak or dead branches will relieve the tree of unnecessary stress. It will also increase overall structural strength.
Hallows and Cavities: Trees that are damaged or even injured are capable of decaying from the inside out. This results in a tree or stem being completely hollowed out – weakening structure and pointing to bigger issues.
Cracks: Apparent cracks with visible splits and the color of split wood are an indicator of a bigger problem.
Co-dominant Branches: Sometimes two branches stem form in the same area of a tree. If they’re large in size, they can often compete for dominance. Stems that are heavily side-weighed can result in a weak attachment.
Root Damage: Trees can be killed and destabilized due to roots circling around the base. Visible root cutting and heavy disturbance can also cause severe issues.
Excessive Lean: If trees are significantly leaning or have soil heaving up around the roots, their structure is faulty.
Insect Damage: Though insects aren’t present during the cold months, the damage that they caused can be. Borer holes, loosening bark and overwintering eggs are signs that your tree has been infested with insects.
