During storms and high winds trees have a higher risk of falling, or branches snapping off. Here are some of the most common jobs we’ve been called out for over the past few weeks.
Removing trees that have fallen
We were recently called out to an emergency job where a tree had fallen on to a bungalow. Luckily no damage was done, however there have been reports of this happening elsewhere in the country, where houses have been destroyed. We removed the tree quickly and used equipment such as our stump grinder to remove the remaining tree stump.
We urge everyone to keep a close eye on surrounding trees during this weather, as it’s much better to reduce the risk than to deal with the aftermath. If a tree is moving a lot in the wind it’s best to have it looked at before any problems arise. This doesn’t always result in a tree being felled, but often just branches trimming back to reduce the strain on the upper part of the tree and prevent any large branches from falling.
Trimming trees back to reduce the risk of them falling
We’ve also been called out to many clear up jobs from large branches falling, which have often resulted in broken fences and damaged garden furniture. As we’ve been driving around we’ve also noticed many large branches that have snapped off in the middle of roads, on pavements and by railway lines.
Preventing this from happening is a relatively easy job, in which we remove any larger branches that are at risk of snapping off. This is much healthier for the overall tree too, as it reduces the risk of the larger branches pulling the rest of the tree down with them
Re-balancing trees
When a large branch has snapped off people often think the damage has already been done and therefore the problem is solved, however this can often cause a ‘loss of balance’. Whilst this is mainly a visual problem, in which people want to even their tree back out for aesthetic purposes, it can occasionally mean that the tree now has more weight on one side, which can lead to further problems.
If you find yourself in this scenario it’s better to be safe and have it looked at. Re-balancing a tree is often a quick job.
Trees not on your land
It’s easy to call out a tree surgeon to work on a tree on your land, but what about trees that aren’t, but may still pose a risk? If you have a tree nearby that looks like it’s a potential hazard but isn’t on your land or property, you should report the incident or hazard ASAP and obtain written consent from your local authority before any tree work is carried out. Local authorities can sometimes take a while to respond, so we recommend doing this as soon as any type of issue is spotted.
