Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple
The largest Hindu Temple in Melbourne is located 36km south-east from the CBD. It is the most well-known Hindu temple in Melbourne. Devotees travel from all over Melbourne to visit it on weekends and Hindu auspicious day. The temple also organizes Hindu Festivals such as Holi and Deepavali which are very popular. These temples are dedicated to the Hindu Gods Shiva & Vishnu. They have their own shrines and entrances. The temple also houses Chandikeshwar and Subrahmanya, Ganapathy (associated with Shiva), and Mahalakshmi and Andal (associated with Vishnu). A shrine is located for the Navagrahas (Nine Grahas Indian Astrology). Graha is a term that refers to planetary bodies that have the potential to influence human life.
The Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple can be found in Carrum Downs, Victoria, Australia. This temple is the largest Hindu temple located in Victoria. The temple worships Shiva and Vishnu who are the principal deities in the Hindu ritualistic tradition. Built and designed in South Indian-Dravidian architecture, the temple aims to unite both streams and create a synthesis.
The official launch of the Hindu Society of Victoria took place on Saraswarthi Pooja Day 1982, which was organized by the Ceylon Tamil association at Hedgely Dean Court Glen Iris. The Prahran Migrant Resources Center hosted monthly prayer meetings on the last Saturday of every month. This was the first step by the newly elected MC. At 6.00 pm, the first prayer meeting took place. After adopting a constitution, the Hindu Society was incorporated on 21 June 1984. The constitution’s principal goal was to build a traditional Hindu Temple at Victoria.
It was decided in March 1984 to buy a piece land in Whittlesea and Springvale. According to the agama shastras, a block of Whittlesea land and another at Carrum Downs were identified. These land blocks are designated as Shiva temples. $72,300 was paid by the society to purchase 14.35 acres of land at Carruin Downs. The members of MC raised approximately $11,000 between them. Other members of the Society offered pledges to obtain interest-free loans. The State Bank of Victoria provided a $45,000 loan for ten years. Additional interest-free loans were used to raise the balance. The loan was paid off within 18 months thanks to the generosity of members and well-wishers.
Although it is small, the children’s playground is large enough to entertain even the most naughty. Peacocks can be found in a small area just next to the playground. Peacock is the Vahana (Vehicle), of Lord Subrahmanya (Son Of Lord Shiva) in Hindu mythology. A Canteen is located in the temple, which is famous for Indian vegetarian delights such as Poori, Idli, Masaladosa and Thali. It is clean and well-maintained, making it a great place to enjoy Indian vegetarian food at a reasonable price. You can find information on the Temple website about Canteen hours.
For functions such as Wedding ceremony, the temple auditorium is available for booking.
Parking is available at no cost for the Temple. There is a toilet facility available
