Ray Bastin Reserve
A sweet bribe is usually given to children who are being taken along for a shopping trip. A visit to Westfield Fountain Gate Shopping Centre is sweetened by the promise of an unforgettable time at Ray Bastin Reserve, which is located just minutes away from the centre.
Rocket Playground will be the main attraction. This will allow your children to have hours of imaginative play.
The theme of this site is SPACE, as the name suggests.
You’ve seen the photos of abandoned Olympic villages that were left in nature and then overgrown. That was my first impression of Ray Bastin Reserve’s rocket playground. It was very strange to be the only one there when we arrived.
This playground opened in 2003 as a Casey Regional Playground (the same name as Casey Fields’ playground). It was awarded with an award but it has since been neglected and all of its fun things have been removed. Although it is still playable, and T wouldn’t have noticed, I felt it was missing some TLC over time to restore its original glory. (I feel old because 2003 is almost twenty years ago!) This is what it looks like.
It was amazing to me that we had driven by this spot so many times while driving towards Fountain Gate and not realized there was an amazing playground behind the trees. It covers a large area and, although it isn’t fenced, it’s far enough from the main roads to provide peace of mind.
The main structure is reminiscent of the Frankston toddler area at Ballam Park. It has long runs and allows for climbing. The surface can be slippery, so T and another girl of the same age had to struggle a bit. With an abacus and naughts-and crosses, and “rooms” to play imaginatively, underneath is just as enjoyable as the top. It is ideal for crawlers and young toddlers who can pull up, but not independently walk.
This must be the most themed playground we have ever seen. I can only imagine how revolutionary it was when it was created. The control panel has buttons and levers that can be used to operate the rocket, and there are also music/sensory experiences, such as a moon buggy and rockers that look like they belong in Star Wars or Star Trek. Even the swings are rocket-themed. A sandpit and a mill are hidden among the trees.
It’s worth visiting this playground, despite the fact that it is quite tired. T loved it so much it was difficult to get him out of it. This is what I consider the best toddler approval.
