History of Dandenong Market

In the future township Dandenong, the first permanent residence was built in the late 1840s. The Dandenong Creek town grew quickly and citizens of the newly established Dandenong Improvement applied to the government in 1863 for permission to open a market in the growing community.

Tuesday 10 October 1866 was the first day of the market. A very early advertisement said that there would be a lot of dairy cows with calves, heifers springing, 50 head of store cattle, a few useful horses, fat and storage pigs and a variety of poultry, potatoes and other produce. It also stated that lunch will be provided.

The market began as a fortnightly event. It soon became a weekly affair. The market attracted 300 buyers and vendors by 1870. The auctioneers sold livestock and fruit, as well as dairy products, skins, honey, lard, honey, and other farm produce. Farmers from Gippsland and the La Trobe Valley traveled to Dandenong to purchase and sell. Later, a Gippsland farmer recalled the difficulties involved in travelling by road. “After a few years, we began to transport our butter, eggs, and bacon to Dandenong. It was still difficult to get there by road; it took three days.
