Bridgewood Primary School

Bridgewood

Previously Gum Scrub Creek PS

Background

Gum Scrub Creek Primary School was awarded $5.4 million to acquire the site and $13 million to plan and construct the new school in the state budget announcements for 2015/16 and 2016/17. This new school, located in the Cardinia Shire will serve new suburbs within the growth corridor areas in Officer and Pakenham. Gum Scrub Creek Primary School is an addition to the Officer Education Precinct. It is located next to Officer Secondary College, and Officer Specialist School.

Cardinia Shire, through strong local governance and partnership has agreed to contribute land (0.4ha), and a $3M capital investment towards the facility. This will allow Cardinia Shire to construct and deliver a fully integrated child- and family centre within the school environment. The school’s Prep learning environment building will house the early learning spaces, which will allow for full integration of primary and early education. This will allow professionals to work together and provide enhanced learning, development, and wellbeing opportunities for all children and their families.

Gum Scrub Creek Primary School is home to Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6, and four Learning Communities. The school has a maximum enrollment of approximately 900 students and a long-term enrollment of more than 451 students. The child and family center includes two kindergarten rooms and an occasional space for care/community. There are also consulting rooms for Maternal and Child Health and visiting physicians.

Site and primary perspective

Bridgewood houses a primary school as well as a fully integrated child- and family centre. The site shares a common vision, which ensures that all stakeholders share the same vision and work together to improve student outcomes. The facility was designed to facilitate seamless transitions of students from primary school through to maternal and child health. The facility design and curriculum support consistency across all year levels. Every child and their family receives enhanced learning, development, and wellbeing opportunities when professionals collaborate.

Bridgewood primary school provides care for children from birth through age six in the Maternal and Child Health Program. The primary years have four Learning Communities. Each Learning Community is responsible for enhancing the learning outcomes of each child. Learning Community 1 comprises foundation and kinder students. Each Learning Community has two levels: 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6.

The school was designed to have a long-term enrollment of more than 451 students, with an average enrolment rate of around 900. The child and family center includes two kindergarten rooms, an occasional care/community space, and consulting rooms for Maternal and Child Health as well as visiting and visiting physicians.

Bridgewood is part a groundbreaking precinct which promotes community ownership and lifelong learning. The Professional Leaning Community approach can be fully implemented in teaching spaces. The PLC approach includes integrated planning and delivery, reflection on the impact of teaching practices, professional interaction, and activation student voice. This approach is based on evidence-based, high-impact teaching and learning strategies. It all fits into the educational vision. Learning Communities are flexible spaces that can accommodate multiple learning styles and can adapt to the needs of students and staff. This creates a sense shared ownership, inclusion, and success in learning.

These facilities were designed to remove traditional barriers to education and to create an integrated practice that supports learners throughout their primary schooling. This shared practice will allow the school to support the learning of each child throughout their learning journey. Every child and their families will feel connected to the local community and have easy access to cultural events and spaces.

Teachers and students use technology to collaborate, research, and create. The school encourages learners to explore ideas together, encourages learners to create refine, reflect upon and publish their work, facilitates peer-to-peer learning and engagement, and mobilizes social networks to support authentic inquiries and investigations.

Each learning community’s staff is responsible for students’ wellbeing and learning outcomes. Staff collaborate to improve student achievement and plan for student learning. Each student’s learning program is customized to suit their needs. Fluid groupings allow for explicit teaching at the child’s level. All students will be involved in Passion and Choice Education (P.A.C.E.) during the week. This curriculum places a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy. The curriculum is focused on developing fundamental literacy and numeracy skills. This will allow students to apply their skills in problem solving and transfer to other situations.

School Council

The 2017 talk of the town was Bridgewood Primary School. Residents were thrilled to learn that a new facility was being built in the area, which will house a primary school as well as an early learning centre and maternal health centre. Bridgewood Primary School was an educational environment that allowed children to grow and thrive in a safe, supportive environment.

The school and its community will grow beyond their original numbers. They will strive to provide the best education possible for all students. The school follows Stephen Convey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective Persons” which are displayed around the school.

These are the 7 habits

Synergize – Be proactive – Start with the end in mind – Put first things before all else – Think win-win. – Look first for understanding, then to be understood. Sharpen your saw.

The school is run by the community. The BFG (Bridgewood Fundraising Group), parents and community members in the learning communities, school council, and many other partners such as The Colman Foundation or The Cardinia Shire are all important contributors.

As the president of the school council, I support teachers and the community. But my primary purpose is to support school governance. I am a member of the school council and meet with senior staff at Bridgewood Primary School.

Volunteers are needed to participate in parent and school councils.
