MONTUNA GOLF CLUB 1922 – 1980

The house was built by Mr Edmund Luke in 1907 for his family. The land was farmed up until 1920, when Ernest and Herbert built “Montuna”, a golf course. In November 1929, the course was opened to the public. It was also the community’s postal centre. Everyday, mail from Beaconsfield was sent to the house and put in personal mail boxes located under the eastern verandah. The tradition continued until Lilly Luke’s daughter founded the small corner shop in 1920s. This became the first postal centre and, later, the Post Office in 1941. In 1893, Mr. Luke joined “The Age”, becoming the first photographer and artist to be appointed to the newspaper. Later, in 1941, the name Montuna was taken from the Monty and Una Lukes.
Mr Luke Senior came up with the idea of forming a Golf Links. Ernie and Bert Luke managed the course until their death.
A number of locals used to play at Lakes Golf Course (now Beacon Hills), and our involvement was facilitated by them. Ernie Dennis and Ossie Williams were the people involved. Vic Barlow, Fred Sulman, Fred Sulman, Ossie Wilkins, Fred Sulman, Fred Sulman, Tom Black, and George Bould were also involved.
At the time, the National Mutual Insurance Company owned the Lakes. H.B., their manager, suggested that we form a local club. Faulkner suggested that we form a local club. We submitted 25 names. Falkiner informed us that there would be a meeting of company members the following week, at which he would present our proposal. Falkiner informed us that there was nothing to do and that a sale was possible to Beacon Hills. This was the start of the Beacon Hills Club.

A meeting was held in the Beaconsfield Hall by those interested in starting a local Club. It was decided that Lukes would be approached in order to make Montuna our home club.

It was decided that we would accept our purchase option. Seven members contributed one hundred pounds each to raise a deposit. J.S. Loverage, W Johnston, and T.F. Black was appointed trustee.
We started operations in 1946 without any equipment. All the work was done by members through rostering and working bees. Sid Thewis, who died in 1946, brought his field mowers to the fairways. The greens were cut using hand mowers.
Maggs of Dandenong was the seller who purchased our first Greens Mower. The Commonwealth Golf Club purchased the Fairways Mower.
Lukes was our only source of water before we bought. We obtained a lease to pump water out of the Cardinia Creek after the purchase (the lease was held by Lukes). This solved our water problems.
The brick and cement tanks were built on the hill. Later, the dam was built on the hill in 1967.

CLUB BUILDINGS

The members built the first one in 1946 using cement bricks. This was to make room for the second building, which is located adjacent to the first tee. It can still be used for monitoring departures of competitors and parties of green fees.
It was decided in 1964 to build a Club House to offer better facilities to members. Rowley Edwards designed the plans and it was finished in 1969.
1979 was the year that the Club House received its latest extension. Two pool tables, carpet bowls and darts were available.

To its current condition, the Club House’s most recent MAJOR REFURBISHMENT was completed in 2007.

HISTORY OF GOLFING

Montuna was initially located in West Gippsland Country District with headquarters at Warragul. The delegates were Sid Thewis, Tom Black and Tom Black.
We were moved to the Peninsula District after the Country Districts were re-allocated. Tom Black and Sid Thewis were the delegates at the Peninsula District Meeting.
