Berwick Fields Primary School
Berwick Fields opened in 2006 with just 140 students. It grew to over 200 students by the end in the school year. We currently have 930 students in Prep to 6. Berwick Fields’ main aim is to instill characteristics and talents in students so that they are able to adjust to changing conditions and be effective part of their community. The emphasis is on the importance of caring for students staff, parents and staff by providing a place which is secure and safe and encourages, acknowledges and rewards hard work and accomplishment.
The school’s culture is shaped by the fundamental beliefs, that help us to improve our learning and our working environment.
“Learning Community” principles are integral to the educational philosophy at the school. They are supported through “Excellence in Education” tools and practices. With this model, we hope to help students become more in control of their own education, behavior and interactions with one another and with the larger community.
Our “Learning Community is built around four distinct and interconnected areas that must be in place in order to create an environment that is healthy and productive. Health and Well Being involves managing self and relationships with other people’. Community Development is about ‘enabling individuals and groups to behave successfully in the real world’. Essential Learning focuses on ‘understanding the world our lives’. School Improvement aims to improve the ability of students, groups and the entire school to have an impact on this world’.
A broad, modern curriculum is designed to meet the specific needs of each student and is taught using an integrated system to team teaching, team teaching, cross-age as well as peer tutoring.
Our school is part of the Berwick South “Innovations and Excellence” Cluster. The primary focus of their work has been to build “deep thinking” skills within each pupil. In determining the requirements of the school community three areas were identified as having an upper priority. They are:
Community Building;
The Environment; and
A Performance and development culture.
We are planning to incorporate these into the structure of our school by applying some of the strategies below:
School will keep trying to research the idea that is “Community Building”, in particular, the ability of community members and parents to establish collaborations that can improve student learning.
Understanding, and becoming active in improving the condition of the earth is an integral aspect of our curriculum. Environmental Education is utilized as a method of practical learning to instill in every pupil, a strong sense of belonging and community.
Constantly striving to improve, both professionally and personally is the standard for everyone in the school community. Professional learning teams will be employed to help facilitate this.
In our school, there is an ongoing and positive approach to student behavior which creates a culture in which personal responsibility and self discipline are taught. The school is currently implementing prevention-based social skills programs like “Bully Busters” and the “You Can Do It!” program. The relationship between experiences thought, feeling, and behavior will be evident in the formal and informal processes of the school. The school is equipped with modern facilities, beautiful gardens, and a lot of flexibility regarding the teaching/working space and is working on quality resources.
