Aura Vale Lake Park can be reached easily from Selby’s Aura Vale Road. Visitors can also access the lake via Wellington Road. Aura Vale Lake Park opens between 9am-5pm. The park is also open from 10am-6pm during daylight saving time.
Aura Vale Lake was an area popular for swimming on the outer east fringe of Melbourne up until the mid-1980s. In summer, I used to swim there multiple times per year. It is now a ghost of what it was. You can canoe or fish here, but swimming is not allowed. Swimming is not allowed due to water quality problems and objects that are submerged.
Cardinia Reservoir was also built in 1973. The lake was created to divert runoff from nearby farmers and stop it from flowing into Cardinia Reservoir. This is Melbourne’s drinking water supply. The nutrient levels took around a decade to build up, and the lake was subject to frequent algal blooms. The park managers found it difficult to manage the expectations of visitors to the lake, so they stopped swimming.
Granite boulders are found under the water in the vicinity of Henley’s picnic site. They are not dangerous if you know about them and it is easy to swim by them to deeper waters. Although I have heard stories about people getting their feet cut by broken glass in the water I never saw anyone get cut.
