Burrinja, a vibrant cultural centre for community in the Dandenong Ranges, has a community-based vision: Building Community through Art.

Burrinja serves as a cultural hub in the Dandenong Ranges. Burrinja is committed to ensuring the cultural vibrancy in the region by providing opportunities for the development of unique arts practices and continued support to existing art forms in Hills.

It includes multiple galleries, artists’ studios and a world-class collection Indigenous and Oceanic art. There is also a 400-seat theatre, black box space, children’s’stay and Play’ art activities, rehearsal, meeting and making spaces, community cultural developments projects, museum collection management, live entertainment, an Indigenous cultural garden, and on-site cafe & bar.

Burrinja is an amazing place to see great art from Tuesday through Sunday.

Burrinja Cultural Centre is a non-profit arts organization in the Dandenong Ranges that aims to bring people together through art performances and exhibitions.

The Burrinja Cultural Centre is a vibrant community center in Upwey that hosts various art exhibitions as well as other events. It has three art galleries and hosts an annual program that includes both regional and local artists.

Burrinja Cultural Centre’s uniqueness is its presence of studio artists, who offer private and group classes in a variety of art forms, including painting, sculpture, and photography. Artists at Burrinja’s cultural centre offer seamless ways to pass on their knowledge and maintain a high standard in all forms of art.

Visitors can also enjoy performances by renowned performers from around the globe. The theatre performance of the world-famous guitar duo, Grigoryan Brothers, is one example. It was held in 2015.

Burrinja Cultural Centre has a cafeteria and bar located on site to ensure that visitors enjoy great performances and delicious meals.

 

In partnership with Yarra Ranges Council

Burrinja and Yarra Ranges Council will collaborate to promote cultural expression and development, foster a sense of community and local identity, and encourage participation in cultural activities using a variety of strategies, from training and advocacy to project development. Burrinja and the Shire agree to recognize the uniqueness of the Shire and provide services that are sensitive to environmental and indigenous issues.

Burrinja awarded Best Small Museum in Victoria, 2013, & 2017

Burrinja was thrilled to be awarded the 2017 Award for the Best Small Museum (Museums Australia, VIC)

Burrinja was awarded the Archival Survival Award for Small Museums for its public programming, exhibition and community engagement in Black Mist Burnt Country.

This award is in addition to the ‘Highly Commended’ award given for the exhibition at the Museums’ and Galleries National Award – ‘Temporary Or Travelling Exhibition’.

Surprisingly, Burrinja is now the third recipient of this prestigious Award in seven years!

Dr Farnell noted that Burrinja’s active partnerships with Yarra Ranges Council, other key funding partners, as well as at a grass-roots level within this region and its creative communities are what make such rewarding outcomes possible.

Museums Australia (Victoria), noted that Burrinja, a community arts centre and public gallery in the Dandenong Ranges, has shown commitment to excellence and best practices involving people and communities in all areas of public programming. Planning a variety of activities and events across key areas of community engagement, arts, education, and community, is centered on ensuring that everyone has access to the best possible programming.

 

Burrinja Gains Museums Australia Victoria Accreditation

Burrinja Cultural Centre (Victoria) is proud to announce that it has been awarded Accreditation from Museums Australia. Burrinja has been diligent in meeting the National Standards for best museum practice. Museums spend two to three years creating policies, procedures and practices that meet recognized museum standards in order to become accredited. The Burrinja board and staff are grateful for their hard work in maintaining and developing these procedures.

A professional panel made an assessment of the museum and produced a positive report.

The Burrinja Car Park is located off Matson Dve. Burrinja visitors are encouraged to carpool to attend events, and asked to be considerate of their neighbours when leaving and parking.

Burrinja Theatre offers wheelchair-accessible seating upon request

The Phonic Hearing Augmentation system (hearing loop), covers 90% of the theatre and works in conjunction hearing aids with the correct switch setting

Guide dogs are welcomed
