Pakenham Football Club
BRIEF HISTORY OF PAKENHAM FOOTBALL CLUB
On the 16th March 1892, the Gembrook Hotel hosted a meeting that led to the formation of the Pakenham Football Club. It appears that teams from Melbourne Mail Carriers, Warragul, Berwick and Dandenong played in our first year. Regular matches were held and the teams often played twice each other. It is not known if there was a Premiership or structured league.
We played Warragul at Warragul on the 27th April 1892 for our first match. The steam train took the team to Warragul. Many familiar faces were part of the Pakenham team: Brunt, Bedford(2) and Colvin, Dillon(3), Woods & Ward, Pittard & Deveney(3); Deveney(3); Woods & Ward – Pennington, Frost, Miller, Hitchens, Milne, Tomlinson, White, Hobson, Egan, Waters, Wilkinson.
The ground was slippery and conditions were wet. Warragul scored 2 goals, Pakenham 5 behinds. Woods, Pennington and Deveney deserve special mentions for Pakenham.
Matches were travelled by horse drawn carriages, horsesback, and steam trains. This was how the Secretary advertised for games, and it continued into the 1900’s.
In the early 1900’s, we joined the Berwick District Association and won our first Premierships in 1908, 1909, and 1914. The Association was renamed the Berwick/Dandenong Football Association after the First World War. We were awarded premierships in 1924, 1925, and 1995.
We joined the Cora Lynn and District Junior Association in 1926 and won the Premiership.
Pakenham was the Foundation member of the West Gippsland Football League, and was the first Premiership player. Except for 1936/37, when the team was playing in the Dandenong District Football League, we remained members until 2001. They won the Premiership in 36.
Pakenham Football Club won many Senior Premierships in the WGFL, including in 1927, 1929 and 1935, 1947, 1948. 1952, 1953, 1956. 1957. 1962. 1972. 1973. 1974. 1982. 1987. 1989. 1990. 1998.
Then, in 2001, we went through a turbulent period. We left the WGFL to join the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League. Our 29th Senior Premiership was won in our first year of playing in the Peninsula Division. The Casey Cardinia Football League Division (MPNFL) is where we now play. It’s a vibrant and strong League.
It is interesting to note that the WGFL was forced to join the Latrobe Valley Football League after Pakenham and Beaconsfield were expelled from the WGFL. This was in order to survive when teams left for the Ellinbank Football League. The disintegration and 65-year history of Country Leagues should be a cause for shame for those in power.
1892 – THE BEGINNING
This year saw football becoming more organized. We see evidence of a League and Association. Regular matches were held and the teams often played each other twice. It is not known if there was a premiership or if there was an actual winner.
The 1892 teams were Warragul and Pakenham, Cranbourne, Dandenong and Ferntree Gully, as well as Melbourne Letter Carriers.
This is a short overview of the 1892 formation of Pakenham Football Club.
General Meeting to create the Pakenham Football Club.
A meeting was held at Gembrook Hotel on March 16th 1892 to create the Pakenham Football Club. The meeting was chaired by Mr Johnson. Pennington stated that he convened the meeting on the request of several gentlemen but that he wanted to emphasize that the Club they were about forming had no connection whatsoever with the club of last year.
He knew there was a credit balance on last year’s Balance Sheet. But the Secretary and books of the club had disappeared like a beautiful dream. He believed that there were small outstanding accounts. He believed he could bring the club out of its slump (Hear, Hear) and get it out at the end. He hoped that he could produce a Balance Sheet for his committee, which they would be happy to publish (Prolonged cheering).
The Chairman then combined several motions from different members, creating many objections and much disorder.
