Our College’s Story

The construction of Officer Secondary College will take place in 2 stages and 2 levels

Before the foundations were laid and the first sod was turned, Stage 1 planning began long before that. Over 2 years, a planning committee was formed with Clarke Hopkins Clarke architects to ensure the school is built to meet community needs. Construction of Stage 1 began in 2013 and was completed in December 2014. Stage 2 is currently under construction and will be completed by December 2015.

The architects were located 49 km from Melbourne on a greenfield site. They used 3 core elements: historical and environmental influences; 21 century learning; and rapid growth prediction. The cardinia Council offices are to the north, Gum Scrub Creek wetlands to the east, and the Officer Specialist School south.

Historical and environmental influences

The 1870s timber industry, the 1880s masonry industry and today’s agricultural industry all have an influence on architecture. These influences are evident in the exterior and interior of buildings as well as the landscaping. The spaces and zones are defined by natural ventilation, cross ventilation, thermal mass chimneys, passive heating and cooling walls, and exposed joinery. The natural light and products used to enhance the sense of openness and sustainability of buildings.

21 ²¹ Century learning

Students have access to many learning spaces and environments, including Stage 1 Sciences, Technologies (wood and metal robotics and food), and Physical Education and the Arts. All college spaces are equipped with technology for 21 century learning. Students can access support through videoconferencing, interactive data projectors (IDP), Mac labs, and personal learning devices. Stage 2 includes a terraced amphitheatre, performing arts, hospitality, research centre, 3 court gymnasium, and administration. All buildings and spaces outside are technology-enabled and include a fully integrated Hearing Augmentation System that will not only benefit students with hearing impairments but also all students. Officer Secondary College offers a wide range of educational opportunities and supports students in their development as individuals.

Rapid Growth

Officer Secondary College will be able to accommodate more than 1200 students. It is constructed on two levels and in Learning Communities. Each Learning Community has its own student reception area. The College has identified pre-planned spaces that can be used to relocate buildings and are seamlessly integrated into its architectural design.
