Granite Track Summit
We really enjoyed this real Australian “bush” walk. Every trail had distinct characteristics. The trails to the south from Wellington Rd were had moderate density woodlands, with mainly Eucalyptus trees. Numerous kookaburra calls sent us off! Near the north end from Wellington Rd was the highlight of the hike. It was the brief ascent of Granite Hill to a Summit view point. At the top, there were no trees, and numerous granite boulders scattered “artistically” across the ground. There were stunning 360-degree views, especially all from Melbourne CBD to the west and to the west, and also towards the Dandenong Ranges to the north and the thriving farms and horse agistments that are close to. After two hills, we walked down Granite Track to the Dargon and Gully Tracks. The latter dipped down to an almost dry creek bed with a range of smaller trees and heathland. Here, the white heath as well as many other wildflowers were blooming. We came across the “hot spot” on the Dargon Track that attracted a group of blue Wrens. The Gully Track the track was home to groups of crimson rosellas as well as other parrots, as well as the chirping of Wattle birds. Then we saw two kangaroos who walked across the track and watched us at a close distance for around just a few minutes and long enough to take a picture of the one! Along the fire track which runs parallel with Wellington Road there was sufficient vegetation to block out the noise of traffic and create the illusion that we were at the edge of the forest.
Distance Time, Difficulty, and Distance: 5.1 km 65-95 minutes (depending on the resting time following the hills). Most of the tracks are undulating and moderate in difficulty, however, there are two steep hill climbs on the Granite Track.
Car Park: Corner of Wellington Rd and Logan Park Track/Rd, Lysterfield, VIC 3156. There is a limited amount of parking available only on the South side of road.
Public Services: None at the parking lot. Make use of them located at Wellington Village Shopping Centre on the corner of Gearon Ave and Wellington Roads, Rowville, VIC 3178 (10 km/15 minutes drive to the west of the Car Park).
