Wilson Botanic Park Berwick

Wilson Botanic Park Berwick

Beautiful gardens, stunning views, and turtles all make up three lakes. This is a walk that takes you through some of the most impressive features of Wilson Botanic Park.

The park is basically a valley with one large and two small lakes, all surrounded by a horseshoe-shaped ridgeline. This creates a beautiful ‘hidden valley’ feeling in the area surrounding the lakes.

This classic park walk is flat and easy. There are manicured gardens, impressive landscaping and a stroll along the lakeside. There are no signs of the city around the park. The walk continues up to the ridge with open parkland that offers views over the surrounding suburbs, and back down to the lake. It’s almost like taking two walks in one area. The hill climb is long enough to get you some exercise, but it’s a short walk.

Wilson Botanic Park Berwick was developed into 39 hectares scenic and peaceful parkland.

The park is located just minutes from the Monash Freeway and attracts both local and international tourists. It also provides sanctuary for a variety of native animals.

The Birdhide, perched at the Basalt lake’s edge, provides bird watchers with the ideal cover. The Directional Marker at the top of the cliff identifies Berwick’s most prominent landmarks.

Wilson Botanic Park Berwick’s picnic areas are a great place to host a barbecue with your friends. The playground is also a popular spot for kids. Many people enjoy the beautiful walking trails that run around the lakes.

It is hard to believe that the site was a quarry before the 1970s, as you walk through the grounds at Wilson Botanic Park Berwick.

William Wilson founded the quarry in 1859. Wilson saw a business opportunity, and began excavating the quarry. The site would soon be renowned for its high quality basalt.

In the late 1980s, the City of Berwick began work on the transformation of the quarry site.

In memory of pioneers, the Honourable Bill Hayden A.C. was elected Governor General in 1992.

Although fossil seams are not common in botanic gardens or parks, Wilson Botanic Park Berwick has two of them!

Many fossils, some of which were more than 22 millions years old, were discovered during the quarry’s operational days. These fossils include leaves, pollens and wood from flowering plants and conifers, as well as fossilised wood and leaves.

Universities across Australia have studied fossil sites and found both temperate and tropical species. These species are rare to be found in one location. This evidence shows that the area was once a tropical rainforest many years back.

Wilson Botanic Park Berwick is beautiful even before you reach the parking lot. The 39 hectares worth of botanic wonder beyond the driveway are a prelude.

Dogs

The park welcomes dogs, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. You can pick up after your dog at the park entrance.
